Pageant & Prelude on Christmas Eve

Grace Families,

Advent will soon be upon us and it’s time to prepare for our Christmas Pageant! Beginning on November 19, children and youth will be using the Christian Education hour (9:30-10:30 AM) to prepare for this year’s pageant.

November 19 Pageant Rehearsal at 9:30 AM
November 26 Pageant Rehearsal at 9:30 AM
December 3 Advent Wreath Making at 9:30 AM
December 10 Pageant Rehearsal at 9:30 AM
December 17 Pageant Rehearsal at 9:30 AM
December 24 Christmas Pageant at 4:00 PM

If your child or youth is interested in being a part of the pageant (particularly a speaking role) please make plans to be present. It takes a village…I’d love some parent assistance. Let me know if you are willing to lend a helping hand. Respond with this Google form.

Additionally, it has been the tradition here at Grace, for children and youth to play a Christmas piece as part of the musical prelude before the 4:00 PM Christmas Eve service. This may be on the piano, flute, violin, or whatever your young musician is currently studying. The deadline for submission is Thursday, December 14 to prepare for putting together and printing the bulletin. Please email Lynn Swanson three things: 1) your musician’s name, 2) title of the piece, 3) composer/arranger. (It’s preferred that the piece is sacred, but it is not a requirement.) You can also reach out to Lynn with questions.

An Update to the Sunday Forum

I want to thank those who came to Sunday’s forum. It was an important space for us to continue reflecting on how we strive to make sense of the world we live in, using our Anglican framework of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason to reflect theologically on the situation and stresses we face in the world today. I want to especially thank everyone who shared their thoughts. I truly believe that level of vulnerability and trust is the key for transformation.

To help us frame our conversations, we will be using Barbara Brown Taylor’s incredible book Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others as our conversation guide. Barbara’s book continues to offer me language to describe my own experience with nurturing conversation across differences. I think it will be a very helpful resource for us to explore. As we shared in class, if we are to understand the difficulties we face, much of the root cause of suffering can be attributed to a lack of awareness and appreciation of others’ faith traditions.

To that end, I encourage you to get a copy of the book to begin reading. We will look to explore a chapter each Sunday, beginning this coming Sunday, November 12. Our schedule for the rest of this year will be as follows:

Sunday November 12, 19, and 26 Sunday Forum will meet
Sunday, December 3 Advent wreath making on the First Sunday of Advent
Sunday, December 10 and 17 Sunday Forum will meet

Then, we’ll regather after Christmas and continue the conversation from there.

As we continue nurturing this space of deep conversation, I would ask you to pay attention to your own experiences of engaging with Scripture, Tradition, and Reason, with Reason including your experience and your critical engagement and thinking. How do you see yourself growing, and how are you able to notice the complexities, desire for growth, and even resistances within yourself?

With gratitude,
Stuart
