News for June 22: Fellowship Gathering, Choir on YouTube and more

Fellowship Gathering

We are headed back to NoFo Brew Co in Gainesville (434 High St SW) for another fun fellowship gathering! Join us from 6 – 8 PM on Tuesday, June 24.

All are invited, hope to see you there!

Communion

We are enjoying fresh baked bread for Communion during June and July! The bread on June 22 is lovingly made by Emily Stephens, daughter of Kim and Dan Stephens. The wine is a port from Chateau Elan, a favorite of Beth Neidenbach & Jim Bradley.

If you’d like to contribute three bottles of your favorite red wine (Georgia/local winery preferred), please contact Fr. Stuart!

A Summer with the Psalms

Each week’s sermon in June and July focuses on the psalm appointed for the day. This is a wonderful opportunity to delve more deeply into this rich resource in our practice of faith.

June 22: Psalm 42

Parish Choir on YouTube

The Grace Church Parish Choir, the University of North Georgia Chorale, and the Cumberland Chamber Orchestra, presented FAURE Requiem back in March as the penultimate event of the Friends of Music 2024-2025 season. A few movements from that performance have been added to our parish YouTube channel for your enjoyment!

A New Icon for Grace

At the June 15 Sunday services, our new icon of St. Cecilia, the Patron Saint of Music and Musicians, was unveiled. This beautiful icon was given in honor of Lynn Swanson and our Parish Choir. St. Cecilia has been placed in the Chapel between St. Mary Magdalene and St. Teresa of Avila.

Supply Drive for Hall County Schools

From now until July 25 we will be collecting school supplies for students attending Lula, Myers, and Tadmore Elementary Schools in Hall County. Our goal is to pack at least 50 backpacks for these children!

Please consider helping in any of the following ways:

  1. Pick up school supplies and drop them off at church. Items such as paper, spiral notebooks, pencils, colored pencils, pocket folders, large glue sticks, erasers, crayons, facial tissue, wet wipes, and sanitizer may be brought to the parish office or dropped off in the nave on Sunday. full list
  2. Contribute a monetary donation by sending a check made payable to Grace Episcopal Church, with “school supplies” noted in the memo line, to the office at 422 Brenau Avenue, Gainesville, GA 30501. You may also place a check in the offering plate on Sundays. An online contribution can be made by clicking this link: Make a Contribution Select “Outreach” as the contribution type and note “school supplies” in the memo line.

Please contact Karen Takada from Grace Church Outreach Ministry with questions.

Facts on childhood poverty in how it impacts a child’s educational outcomes:

Child poverty begins with adult poverty and creates a vicious generational cycle.
Children who experience poverty are more likely to experience food insecurity, poor housing, lower educational attainment and limited access to healthcare.
In 2023, Hall County’s childhood poverty rate (16.1%) was higher than the U.S. average (13.7%). Source: Data from the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps County Health Rankings.
According to the United Way, approximately one in four children in the United States cannot afford school supplies, which drives up absenteeism and hinders a child’s academic performance.
Investing in educational opportunities for disadvantaged children can help break the cycle of poverty.
