News February 19-25

Ash Wednesday

We will observe the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services on February 22 at 12:00 PM in the nave and 7:00 PM in the nave and online. The service will feature music (7:00 PM), prayers, a sermon, the Litany of Penitence, and the Imposition of Ashes.

Let us focus our prayers in these days as we remember that God’s presence surrounds us.

Pancake Supper

The youth of Grace cordially invite all parishioners to the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 21 from 6:00 – 7:30 PM in the Parish Hall. The reservation deadline has been extended until Monday, February 20 at noon!

Cost is: free for children age 5 and under, $5 for children and youth age 6-18, and $10 for adults. The youth and the youth leaders will be cooking, serving, welcoming, and cleaning up afterwards. This annual fundraiser helps support our youth program, so tips will be welcomed and much appreciated

There is no nursery offered during the pancake supper – the whole family is invited! So, join us for this party with plenty of butter and fat and sugar before you put it all away on Wednesday morning to begin your Lenten devotion.

Prayer Yoga

Prayer Yoga classes will not meet on Monday, February 20.

Compline

There will be no Compline service held on Tuesday, February 21.

Bible Study Series: Violence and the Sacred

The Bible Study CE Class continues on February 19 with the 3rd installment in our four-part series exploring stories of violence throughout Holy Scripture. The suggested readings for “Armies Against Armies; Nations Against Nations” are Genesis 17:1-8 and the book of Deuteronomy. An ambitious portion, for sure! These passages offer social, religious, and political context for the battles mentioned.

We will also bring into this week’s discussion the issue of “holy war” and the concept of God taking sides, and by extension, official religious sanction or endorsement of international conflicts. Please join us for what promises to be a thoughtful and challenging conversation.

The Bible Study meets in the chapel on Sundays at 9:30 AM and is facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Park.

Preparation for Newcomers/Refresher Class

Don’t forget that the special six-week forum begins this Sunday that will be a welcome space for those who are new to the entire Episcopal Church, those who are new to Grace, and those who have been around a while but would appreciate a space to do a deeper dive. I’ll meet with folks in the parish hall at 9:30 AM for a conversation, and we will build each week on the stories and insights we share.

To help structure the conversation, below is a link to a curriculum I developed that is based on the Catechism outlined in The Book of Common Prayer. You can bring this and your Prayer Book, and we’ll be ready to go.

I look forward to our time together!

Blessings,
Stuart
