The Holy Eucharist, Rite I
a typical 8:15 AM worship service at Grace Church

The following service is taken directly from one of the 8:15 AM service bulletins at Grace Church. While not intended to be a word for word recitation of the Book of Common Prayer, we hope it will give you a good idea of what our early service is like.

Summary of Law and Kyrie

BCP 324

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith:
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hand all the Law and the Prophets.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Collect of the Day

BCP 325

O Lord, we beseech thee mercifully to receive the prayers of thy people who call upon thee, and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfill the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Reading: Amos 7:7-15
This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword." Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos has said, 'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land."' And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom." Then Amos answered Amaziah, "I am no prophet, nor a prophet's son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, and the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
The Psalms and the Lessons appointed for Sundays follow the Lectionary, which is arranged in a three-year cycle. Thus, Episcopal congregations across the nation will hear the same lesson on Sundays.

* Psalm 85:7-13
7 Show us your mercy, O LORD, *
and grant us your salvation.

8 I will listen to what the LORD God is saying, *
for he is speaking peace to his faithful people
and to those who turn their hearts to him.

9 Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, *
that his glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth have met together; *
righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11 Truth shall spring up from the earth, *
and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

12 The LORD will indeed grant prosperity, *
and our land will yield its increase.

13 Righteousness shall go before him, *
and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

The Gospel Reading: Mark 6:1-6

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Prayers of the People

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we offer our prayers to God in the name of Jesus Christ, saying: Lord, hear our prayer.

For the fulfillment of the mission of the church, especially praying for Frank, our Presiding Bishop; for Neil, our Bishop; and for Doug and Josh, our clergy. In the Anglican Cycle of prayer, we give thanks for the Church of Bangladesh. In our Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for The Marietta Convocation and in particular: St. James and The Church of the Annunciation, Marietta; St. Teresa, Acworth; St. Clement, Canton; Christ Church, Kennesaw; and The Church of the Holy Spirit, Cumming. Let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

For this congregation as we hand on the faith of our ancestors from one generation to another and for the power to live out the promises of our baptism, let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

For the renewed witness to the Gospel among Christian people, let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

For the consolation of all those who struggle with doubt or disbelief, let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

For the just and proper use of your creation, and for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

In our parish cycle of prayer, we pray for those celebrating birthdays, (especially …) and those celebrating anniversaries, (especially …); let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer, (especially…); for the victims of war, conflict and violence; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, (especially…), let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer

Each of us present is invited to offer to God your thanksgivings and petitions, either aloud of silently. Let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, hear our prayer.

Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In the communion of the Holy Spirit, and with all the saints in light, let us commend our lives and the lives of one another to the Lord. Amen.

At Grace Church, a group meets six times per year to write the prayers that will be used in the services during the church seasons. Lay persons lead the intercessions on Sunday mornings.
