The cornerstone for the “old church” was laid on March 28th, 1937 after the previous building’s destruction in the tornado that struck Gainesville in 1936. The new building was consecrated in September of 1937 and worship services were held there until January 31st, 1993. Finally having outgrown our space, the parish moved into a new parish hall during construction of the new nave and church facility.
Marilyn McCarver dedicates her stitching to the memory of her late husband, Dr. Pierpont Flanders Brown, Jr., and to honor her husband, Dr. William Cullen McCarver, Jr.
Ann Collins’ thoughts while stitching her boxing bands: “I found myself thinking of the Episcopal Church that was so much a part of my life as I grew up. In the pews were individual kneelers, each covered in a lovely piece of needlework. Several years after John and I were married in this beautiful church, there was a fire, and the kneelers were destroyed. Some of the ladies in the church undertook a mammoth project to replace the needlework for new kneelers. As word of the project spread, John's mother, who has always been a devout Presbyterian, but knowing how much Church of the Ascension meant to me, volunteered to needlepoint one of the replacement pieces. As I stitched, I often thought of her and of her labor of love for the church and for me.” |
