The chalice symbolizes Holy Communion and the forgiveness of sin won by Christ’s blood shed upon the cross. (Matthew 26:27-29) Grapes symbolize Holy Communion, and Christ’s blood, shed upon the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Grapes can also be used to represent the fruitfulness of Christian life. 2
Dottie Prince dedicates her stitching in memory of her grandmothers: Jessie Mae Shirley and Esther Bailey, who taught her how to stitch. Dottie said that she felt it was a privilege to be involved in this project and hoped that the kneelers would be used for many years.
Angie Dayton, who stitched on three separate sets of Boxing bands, shared: “My son Thomas was born in December of 2001 and had the underneath view of my first boxing bands from his perch in the baby seat. Daughter Clara, meanwhile, got her learner’s permit and driver’s license and drove many miles as I calmed my nerves by stitching away in the passenger seat. Matthew, my middle child, took a few stitches in the boxing band, and my husband Mike showed remarkable forbearance as I parked myself on the sofa stitching instead of cooking, cleaning, or changing diapers. I have always loved the Chapel kneelers, and am glad I could take a part in making the Nave even more beautiful.”
Becky Geiger dedicates the boxing band in thanksgiving for the life of her son Leonard (Len) Jr. During the time of the stitching he had two critical events. He received his life saving double lung transplant in May ‘02. Three months later he was again near death for ten days following a severe bicycle accident. “We deeply appreciate the prayers of the people of Grace, and we are thankful for his full recovery and continuing good health.” |
